AT HOME WITH KEEGAN • SOME MUSINGS ON MY TREE CHANGE

As you may know, I relocated my home and studio from Melbourne (Naarm) to Gippsland (on Gunaikurnai country) in 2020. At the time this felt like a monumental decision, but it has since become one of the best choices I've made for my mental health and creativity. City life had begun to stifle me and I found myself yearning for nature, an edible garden and the space to take on endless projects.

It took years of searching, but when my partner and I laid eyes on this property, we knew it was where we wanted to put down roots. The clincher was the inclusion of a barn-style dwelling. Being project-driven, the idea of reinvigorating this space was irresistible.

Renovating. The never-ending work days. The fights. The tears. We learned a lot, we persevered and are quietly proud of the space we have created. It’s light-filled, teeming with wildlife and now has a packed edible garden which feeds us year-round. Sharing this tranquil home with others seeking a quiet bush getaway has been our greatest joy, and we've made it available for bookings.

It was such a pleasure to have Rosie Sayers bring her talent and gorgeous energy to ‘The Barn’, capturing me in my natural environment, away from the sewing machine.

If you’re contemplating a tree change, let’s talk. It’s not as terrifying as it seems (other than the coffee).

Having a large garden is one of the greatest benefits of living in the country.
Handmade & secondhand furniture throughout the house was non-negotiable (we made an exception for the beds).
Lucky to have an established orchard full of citrus and stonefruit.
The garden features plenty of herbal teas including aniseed myrtle, lemongrass and pineapple sage. We are also trying our hand at growing our own green tea.
Sunlight peeking through the valley.
Many hours spent on the deck with friends and family.
One thing I will say, is that I miss city food terribly! But my cooking has improved.
Winter sun (not a highrise building in sight).
An art deco table from the side of the road, antique chairs from facebook marketplace and a mirror from the former fit-out.
A greenhouse means we can grow chillies (and more) over winter.
Imperfect wooden and mud brick surfaces.
Almost time to harvest the yacon.
People always ask me what this foliage is - so if you're wondering, it's from a feijoa tree.
Off to make hot sauce.
Bye for now.
